Recently, I met a colleague who works with around 120 students a year: 30-40 students in each grade of high school. She described her approach as “structured and low-touch.”
This colleague takes a knowledge-based approach, suggesting colleges, telling students what to do and when, maybe editing essays. This is sometimes called College Coaching.
Other counselors work with students only on essays, helping generate and refine them. These are often called Essay Advisors or College Essay Consultants.
I take a different approach, one that is both data driven and process-based.
I rely on data to inform my knowledge, keeping current with a vast body of statistics about hundreds of colleges, the latest trends in higher education, AND with the most current research about the well-being of emerging adults. I meet with students regularly over the course of many months to help them recognize their strengths, interests, and passions and craft compelling and authentic college applications.
I do this because as a teacher, I know the best learning happens within the context of a trusting relationship. As a writer, I know that the best writing comes out of self-awareness and the ability to make connections. As a researcher, I value evidence and data. And as a mom who has sent two kids to college, I know you need someone who will nurture your child and hold them accountable. You can read more about my background here.
My goals for our work together are simple:
(1) Your child will have choices about where to go to college
(2) Your child’s well-being will be enhanced and their skills will grow
(3) Your child will find the process enjoyable (at least sometimes!)
